What does the ADHD evaluation process look like for adults?

I'm in my mid-30s and recently started wondering whether some of the issues I've struggled with for years could be related to ADHD. I've always assumed I was just disorganized or bad at managing my time, but the more I read about adult ADHD, the more some of the symptoms sound familiar.

At work, I often have trouble staying focused on tasks that require sustained attention. I start projects with good intentions, get distracted by something else, and then find myself scrambling to finish things at the last minute. I've also noticed that I frequently forget appointments, misplace important items, and have difficulty keeping track of multiple responsibilities at once.

What I'm confused about is how psychiatrists actually determine whether an adult has ADHD. Since a lot of these behaviors can overlap with stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, or other issues, I'm curious about how they sort everything out and arrive at a diagnosis.

For anyone who has gone through an adult ADHD evaluation, what was the process like? Did the psychiatrist ask about your childhood, school experiences, or family history? Were there questionnaires or assessments involved, or was it mainly based on interviews and discussion?

I'm considering scheduling an appointment but would like to have a better understanding of what to expect. I'd appreciate hearing about real experiences from adults who have gone through the diagnostic process and what you found most helpful along the way.

Adult ADHD evaluations can feel intimidating at first, but from what I’ve heard they’re usually a pretty detailed conversation rather than just a quick questionnaire. A good psychiatrist will often ask about childhood patterns, current work/home struggles, sleep, anxiety, mood, and whether the symptoms are causing real impairment, so looking through a local page like psychiatrist coral springs may help you get a sense of what that first step can involve.
